Dept praises matric achievers from child-headed homes
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Department of Social Development has congratulated matrics from the class of 2015 who achieved their National Senior Certificates despite coming from child-headed households.
The candidates formed part of the Isibindi Model that deployed community-based child and youth care workers to mentor children in the programme. Isibindi is a Zulu word meaning bravery.
More than 1000 KZN matrics who went through the programme passed their exams collectively achieving 31 distinctions.
Soweto pupil Magdeline Masuku says it was tough but she kept on going.
"I had to walk from home to school even if it was raining. I'd go to school without eating anything and then have to go back home afterwards but I did not give up.
"I just gave it my best. Everyone can rise above their circumstances if they are passionate and dedicated towards what they do," she said.
