Dept address Grade R teacher concerns

The KwaZulu-Natal Education Department says teachers' union, National Teachers Union is welcome to threaten strike action over salary issues for Grade R teachers in the province.

Grade R

The union told reporters in Durban yesterday that members are unhappy that some Grade R teachers earn R5 000 a month and are excluded from benefits.

NATU is threatening a massive strike across KZN during the 2016 academic year if the situation does not change.

Education's Muzi Mahlambi says talks between the department and the union are ongoing.

He is confident the matter will be resolved before the strike is considered as a last resort.

"If everything fails this will be the last option. What we can assure the public out there, including the Grade R educators, is that we are engaging in talks and talks are at a very advanced stage in terms of improving the employment conditions of all employees in our system, Grade R educators included," he said.
