Denver train crash: 'Prasa trains lacked maintenance'
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
The findings of the Board of Inquiry into the Denver train crash that left one person dead and 240 injured show there is a lack of maintenance of trains by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa.
A passenger train rammed into the back of another stationary train at the Denver Train Station in Johannesburg in April last year.
Transport Minister Dipuo Peters made the findings public at a media briefing today.
She says the investigation also shows there was a breakdown in radio communication at the time of the accident.
"I would also go on to the recommendations that the BOI (Board of Inquiry) has made. They recommended a competent person or contractor must be appointed to assist with the immediate maintenance repairs of the existing radio system and related equipment.
"Prasa must as a matter of urgency provide separate power supply back up to the VOIP telephone system and radio system," she said.
