Delays in borehole water access in Ulundi
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Officials in the Zululand District Municipality say water testing centres have become overloaded, causing a delay in access to borehole water in Ulundi.
Mayor Mpiyakhe Khuzwayo says before communities can be allowed access to borehole water, it has to be tested, and due to the severe drought and the growing number of boreholes being drilled, this is taking longer.
He says they're currently waiting for the test results of 18 boreholes which are desperately needed in Ulundi.
"This municipality is dependent on the uMfolozi River - the one you cross before you enter Ulundi. It's dry and there is no water to draw. The water from the well has been exhausted so there is nothing to clean at at the treatment works."
"So we are trying hard now to quickly equip all the boreholes to make sure people get water from the boreholes," he said.
