Death toll rises following Mpumalanga mine blast
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Five people have now been confirmed dead at a Mpumalanga mine where there was a gas explosion.
It's believed over 20 people became trapped underground at Gloria Mine in Middleburg a few days ago.
Around forty people are said to have gone down the shaft, but some of them manage to get out.
Locals authorities were only notified of the incident yesterday and a search and rescue party was sent down.
"The mine rescue team members came on site. In the early hours of the morning, they managed to retrieve four bodies. We do not know the exact number of people [still] inside. We have just been told that operations are going to commence again on the day so that they are able to go inside," Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Leonard Hlathi said.
