Death toll rises to 21 in Phongolo crash

The death toll in Friday’s horrific crash near Phongolo has risen to 21.
A bakkie carrying schoolchildren collided with a truck on the N2.
"The crash involves a truck and a bakkie that had been transporting schoolchildren.
"The exact cause of the crash is not known at this stage and will be investigated by the police."
Transport and Community Safety MEC Sipho Hlomuka is expected to visit the scene on Saturday and meet with the affected families.
Commenting on this gruesome accident, MEC Hlomuka called on road users to be responsible and to adhere to the traffic laws.
“We are deeply disturbed by this fatal accident. The death of so many young lives is a serious tragedy.
"We have sent our forensic team to investigate the cause of this accident. We are calling on responsible road using in the province to end the scourge of crashes and fatalities," says Hlomuka.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.
“We received these terrible news yesterday evening. Most of the victims are school children making this more heartbreaking. I send my condolences to the families of all the victims. Road Safety continues to be a priority of our government."
