Death toll in listeriosis cases rises to 61

There's been an increase in the number of cases of listeriosis with 727 confirmed cases to date.

61 people have died after contracting the virus.
Minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi has briefed the media in Pretoria this morning.
The bacteria, listeria is found in soil, water, meat, fresh produce - and the virus - now traced to all nine provinces - has been ranked by the department as a notifiable disease.

KZN is ranked third in terms of the number of cases - at 7% while Gauteng has the most reported cases at 61%.
Motsoaledi has advised health practitioners to be alert when dealing with pregnant women and newborn babies. Investigations are ongoing into the source of the outbreak.
