It follows an incident on one of the municipality's main pipelines on the Northern Aqueduct in Durban North last week.

A man believed to have been tampering with an air valve at the site in Riverhorse Valley was killed on Thursday, apparently by a high-pressure explosion of water.

In a statement, the city has confirmed an air valve was found to have been removed, causing excessive water from the trunk main pipeline to flood the chamber.

Engineers say anyone who would have been inside the chamber would have suffer serious injuries or death due to the high pressure in the pipeline.

The incident has affected supply to some areas in the north of Durban.

Police in Greenwood Park have opened an inquest docket following the incident.
