Deadline set for Grade R teacher conditions

The provincial Education Department has until the end of next month to avert a teachers' strike early next year.

That is the deadline given by teacher's union, National Teachers Union, should the department not provide clarity on employment conditions of Grade R educators by then.

Natu's Allan Thompson says KwaZulu-Natal Grade R teachers are amongst the worst paid getting R5 000 per month, but are the most sidelined when educator issues are addressed.

"We cannot simply accept that people who get R5 000 must not get any form of adjustment when all other people have received 28%. They've never received 28%.

"They've never received the increase from R900 to R1 200 for housing. Workers are getting bonuses but these ones don't get bonuses. They don't have leave or medical aid. They are just workers without any conditions of employment," he said.
