The ANC in KZN says one of the biggest mistakes made by the ruling party was failing to thoroughly vet Andre de Ruyter before his appointment as Eskom's CEO

It says the party needs to re-evaluate the representatives it deploys to key state-owned enterprises.

Provincial chairperson Siboniso Duma, zeroed in on the goings-on at the embattled utility, at a provincial lekgotla in Umhlanga. Duma pointed to comments by Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele recently that de Ruyter was not vetted before he was appointed Eskom chief.

"Just imagine the ideological superstructure of de Ruyter was black what was going to happen. He’ll be lambasted day and night."

He also lashed out at the media over its response to a recent TV interview, in which the former CEO linked some in government to corrupt activities at the utility.

"The media instead is glorifying and making him as if he is a martyr of some sort. Everything that comes out of his mouth is gospel truth. The reality is going to Eskom today, in the majority of contracts that are within the ambit of Eskom, the beneficiaries are white males. Those are the real beneficiaries of Eskom."

Meanwhile, the ANC has given de Ruyter seven days to lay criminal charges against those he claims to have been involved in wrongdoing and criminality at Eskom. The party says the police need to be given an opportunity to investigate the allegations. It says if he fails to do so, it will bring charges against him for failing to report the offences.
