De Lille takes DA to court over party removal

Patricia de Lille says she'll be challenging the DA's cessation clause - one that the party used to oust her - in court.

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille speaks at the Mayors Innovation Studio in Paris, October 22, 2017.

This morning - the leadership of the DA announced it had terminated her membership of the party - on the basis De Lille made her intention to resign from the DA during a radio interview last month.

The DA says according to its constitution - this was enough to have De Lille's membership rescinded.

The party says she's also being replaced as Cape Town Mayor.

But De Lille is not going down without a fight - insisting she is still the mayor.

"I will show on Friday that this so-called automatic cessation clause is unconstitutional and unfairly applied to me. That is the purpose of going to court on Friday. I have always maintained that my only aim in this matter was to clear my name and that I was not married to any position," De Lille said.

Deputy Mayor, Ian Neilson, will now serve as the acting Mayor for the City.
