Arguments in Werner de Jager's application have wrapped up in the local court on Tuesday.

His wife Liezel de Jager was found strangled to death at their Athlone Park home over two years ago.

Her husband was arrested last year by the Cold Case Unit.

The Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court previously heard from the State that De Jager should not get bail as he is a danger to the public and witnesses and will likely evade trial if released.

On Tuesday, defence attorney Andre May told the court the accused doesn't know who the witnesses are, and therefore poses no threat to them.

He also insisted De Jager was not a flight risk.

The court also heard he should be granted access to his children as, according to a child counselling report, they've been asking when their father live with them again.

State attorney Gayle Greyling countered that a high court order states that De Jager can only engage with his children when he is mentally stable.

Greyling put it to the court that the 45-year-old father who is diagnosed with bipolar has been unable to manage his mental welfare and has tried to end his life on several occasions.

She told the court that incarceration is the most stable option for him.
