The mega-church known as the Jesus Dome was destroyed in a massive blaze last night.

Pastor John Torrens says the scene has now been handed over to the South African Police Service by the fire department adding that the grounds are currently out of bounds.

He says he heard about the fire at about 5:30 yesterday and just couldn't believe it.

''I was up in Hillcrest, quickly got in my car and came down here. I just couldn't believe the quickness in which the whole Dome was burnt out, it was quite heart-rendering, to say the least,'' he said.

Torrens says they are grateful for all the support.

''The fire brigade, the police that were here - they did such an amazing job. We thank God that there was nobody on site, nobody was hurt, and just also to all our congregants and ministers and people from the city of Durban that have just shown us tremendous support. We have been literally overwhelmed by their love,'' he said.

Firefighters battled for several hours to douse the massive flames.
