Daymed Private Hospital and doctor face tax evasion, credit fraud charges

KwaZulu-Natal prosecutors say arrest warrants have been issued for a Pietermaritzburg-based doctor and his wife, who are facing tax evasion and credit fraud charges amounting to millions.

Spokesperson for the NPA, Natasha Kara, says a stay has been granted until February which is when the pair and their co-accused are scheduled to line up in court.


She says Navind Dayanand and his company Daymed Private Hospital are facing income and VAT fraud-related charges, with a potential prejudice of R498m for Pay As You Earn.


Kara says a hospital bookkeeper and a tax practitioner appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday.


Dayanand, his wife Nerupa who is the facility's financial manager and Carla Louden a tax practitioner handed in sick notes.

"The case against Pietermaritzburg doctor, Navind Dayanand and his company, Daymed Private Hospital (Pty) Ltd appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Commercial Crimes Court today [Tuesday]. Dayanand is charged along with his wife, Nerupa, as well as Douglas Mpofu, Carla Domenica Louden and Yagasami Ronnie Perumal.


"The hospital is charged with Company Income Tax (CIT) fraud, Value Added Tax (VAT) Fraud and Pay as You Earn (PAYE) credit fraud with an actual prejudice of approximately R37 million to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and a potential prejudice of R498 million for PAYE.


"Doctor Dayanand is charged with Personal Income Tax fraud and VAT fraud to the value of R142 million and PAYE credit fraud with the potential prejudice of R637 million to SARS. The alleged offences range from the period of 2012 to 2020."
