Dark weekend ahead as Eskom ramps up load shedding to stage 3
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Eskom has moved load shedding to stage 3 from Friday afternoon.
The embattled power utility says stage 3 will start at 2pm, and continue throughout the weekend until 5am on Monday.
The power cuts will then be reduced to stage 2.
Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says the decision to ramp up load shedding was due to a loss in additional five generating units on Friday morning.
"The additional load shedding tonight is required to manage and recover the emergency generation reserves which have been utilised extensively over the past five days," says Mantshantsha.

"The delay in the return to service of Koeberg Unit 2 has exacerbated the capacity shortages. During this weekend, critical planned maintenance at Hydro de Cahorra Bassa in Mozambique, Lethabo, Majuba, Matimba and Camden power stations will be carried out in preparation for the week ahead.”
