DA: Zuma misjudged nation's mood
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
The DA's chief whip in Parliament, John Steenhuisen says President Jacob Zuma and the ANC have misjudged the mood of the nation.
Steenhuisen feels South Africans are angry at the way in the which Zuma and the ruling party have handled the Nkandla matter following the Constitutional Court's judgement earlier this week.
The ConCourt found that Zuma violated his Constitutional duties by failing to implement the recommendations made by the Public Protector on non-security upgrades to his private home in northern KZN.
Steenhuisen says Zuma's apology earlier tonight was an inadequate response to the judgement, saying the DA will continue with its efforts to have the president impeached.
"What South Africans need to realise is that the real power to strike out against President Zuma and express themselves is through the ballot box. The local government elections later this year are a golden opportunity for South Africans to show that it is them who has the power," he said.
"We need them to register and vote so that they can express themselves on this particular matter at the ballot box," said Steenhuisen.
The EFF in KwaZulu-Natal's Marshal Dlamini says they're not surprised by Zuma's response.
"There've been many occasions when the ANC has shown it has no respect for the country or anyone else but themselves," he said.
