DA welcomes disaster area declaration following storms

The DA in KZN has welcomed the provincial cabinet's move to declare eThekwini and other areas ravaged by floods last week disaster areas.
At least 14 people in the province have been confirmed dead following the storms.
The damage in eThekwini is estimated to be between R400-million and R500-million.

The DA's Hlanganani Gumbi says they believe lives could have been saved and damage minimised if the early warning system was properly utilised by local government authorities.

The DA's Hlanganani Gumbi says they believe lives could have been saved and damage minimised if the early warning system was properly utilised by local government authorities.
"Our main concern is actually reviewing the early warning systems that are in place by the Department of Co-operative Governance and the Metro. Why was it that communities were not properly warned about the massive storm that was coming. Another greater concern in that over R140-million was slashed from the disaster management budget in the last financial year," he said.
