DA wants driving license printer in each province
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
News that the country's only driving license printing machine has once again broken down has seen the DA calling for a decentralised process.
The Transport Department says the latest breakdown was brought on by a routine maintenance and expects the machine to be offline for a period of about three weeks.
It is not the first time the machine has broken down, resulting in a backlog in issuing thousands of driving licenses late last year.
The DA's Thamsanqa Mabhena says it would be ideal for each province to have its own printing machine.
"In light of the ongoing issues surrounding the driving license card machine and the department’s continued mismanagement, the DA reiterates our call for each province to independently produce the service.”
Mabhena says although it may initially cost more to buy additional printing machines, it will be a beneficial long-term investment.
"A practical and risk-mitigating solution would involve providing each province with its own machine, ensuring sufficient back-up in case of future breakdowns. This approach is consistent with our previous recommendations and would improve overall service delivery and responsiveness to citizens, despite the department’s consistent failures."
