DA wants criminal charges laid against KZN principal amid corporal punishment allegations
Updated | By Nothando Mkize
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KZN has called for criminal charges to be laid against a northern KwaZulu-Natal principal following allegations that corporal punishment was used to discipline a matric pupil.
The pupil was apparently left with blisters on her hand after she was caned at Mzilikazi Secondary School.
The DA's Imraan Keeka says they've written to provincial Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu.
"We are also reliably informed that this is not an isolated incident and habitual practice of this principal.

"Apart from calling on the MEC Mshengu to conduct a comprehensive probe at this school, the DA has also asked him to suspend the principal until such time as all the facts can be gathered. Learning and teaching requires a safe and conducive classroom environment.
KZN Education's Muzi Mahlambi says they're trying to get to the bottom of what happened.
"If it's found to be true we will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against the principal. Administering corporal punishment is illegal. We are in touch with management where the school is.”
