DA wants eThekwini's water licence removed
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The Democratic Alliance in KZN says it is
looking at taking legal action to have eThekwini Municipality's water licence
removed.
The party held a picket this week outside the offices of the South African Human Rights Commission over the ongoing water crisis in the city.
Durban has been in the grip of a supply crisis that has affected several areas, including Durban North, Umhlanga, Phoenix, Verulam, and Tongaat.
This week, the Auditor General pointed fingers at the lack of maintenance at the city's water treatment plants.
A regular review of the city's sewerage networks was also recommended, along with new plans to address certain deficiencies.
The party's KZN leader, Francois Rodgers, says they will be having discussions with the city's water committee as well as the National Assembly on this matter.
"There is no quick fix solution but it is something that we will on a daily and hourly basis - ensure that we explore to remove the water licence from the city of eThekwini."
Meanwhile, the Commission's Pervershree Padyachee says they will be meeting weekly with eThekwini officials until the resource is fully restored in the city.
"Should the restoration of water not be affected then the commission will in terms of the investigative report from the water inquiry consider its various options and alternatives in ensuring water services are restored."
