The president and the security cluster have said the violence in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng was orchestrated by a handful of individuals, with Cyril Ramaphosa calling it a failed insurrection.

There's also been some finger-pointing, with State Security Minister Ayanda Dlodlo maintaining intelligence was handed over to the SAPS so they could intervene.

But Police Minister Bheki Cele denies they were given this information.

DA leader John Steenhuisen says through the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA), they plan to blow the lid off on what he's describing as the mammoth blundering by authorities and hold those responsible to account.

"If Minister Cele received intelligence on the planned looting and failed to act on it, then he could potentially be in contravention of the national security intelligence agency act.

"Minister Dlodlo should therefore publicly release the intelligence reports which she claims were made available to law enforcement, because such reports would likely reveal evidence of a failure to comply with the law by the SAPS and this would most certainly be in the public interest."
