A motion has been tabled and passed at Council to deal with the mushrooming trucking industry in the South Durban Basin.

It was brought by the DA, saying measures are needed to protect lives and infrastructure in the area.

"A lot of the roads are not designed for heavy articulated vehicles, so we end up seeing storm auto drains being broken to traffic lights to streetlights and just the general damage."

"But then there's also the congestion that is caused and then most importantly.

"Fortunately, there hasn't been anything recently, but in the past, we have seen horrific accidents."

Councillor Gavin Hegter says while they understand the importance of the trucking industry to the economy, it has grown at a phenomenal rate in the South Durban area.

He says they're asking for additional resources for the eThekwini Metro Police Department's Clairwood trucking unit.

"The city currently does not currently have a heavy-duty contract, so where there are infringements, we can’t tow the truck away."

"And the other side of it is to request for proper signage to inform these trucks because very often now they just follow their GPS, which will take them into their residential area, which is inconvenient, so we are looking for a proper signage directed by the city to show were trucks are not allowed."
