DA retains Chatsworth Ward 73 in by-election win
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has claimed victory in the hotly contested Ward 73 of Chatsworth, south Durban.
A by-election was held there on Wednesday, where voters came out to decide who they want to run the ward ahead of next year's crucial national elections.
Contestation for the ward saw ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa descend onto the area at a time when the ruling party is desperate to regain ground following its dismal performance at the 2021 local government elections.
In its statement, the DA in KZN says not only have they retained the ward but have also done so with an increased support of 81,7%, a jump from 67.5% in the 2021 elections.

DA KZN Leader Francois Rodgers says the vote of confidence shows people are fed up with the ANC's incompetence.
"This after the ANC and its circus-road show with Ramaphosa where they were welcoming hundreds of DA members who we didn't recognise other than the councillor Ronnie Pillay who left the DA to retire in the ANC.
"The people of KwaZulu-Natal and of Chatsworth have clearly seen through empty promises and with 2024 looming, clearly all the possibilities and opportunities are there."
