DA opens case of alleged election fraud in KwaDukuza

The Independent Electoral Commission says it's finding out whether or not the DA in KZN lodged a complaint about alleged election fraud before 5 August  - which was the deadline set for political parties to lay formal complaints.

The party claims pensioners in KwaDukuza Ward 1 voted twice in last month's municipal polls and has opened a case of fraud at the local police station.

The EFF and IFP also lodged objections with the IEC - with the same allegations.

The DA's Madhun Sobram Singh says it's believed some elderly voted during the two days of special votes and cast ballots again on voting day.

"One of our PR councillors, Thokozani Gumede, has brought to our attention there were irregularities at the polling stations where people cast their votes on the 1st and 2nd [of August], and also cast their vote on the 3rd. Those who cast their votes also went to the SAPS in KwaDukuza, and have given affidavits confirming that they had cast their votes twice," he said.

The IEC's Mawethu Mosery says if the DA had filed a complaint, there would have been an outcome by now.

"We do not have powers to alter the results that have now been declared and gazetted. So if the desire of the DA is a change in the results, they definitely have to approach the courts," he said.
