The official opposition saw former party leader Mmusi Maimane abruptly resign last year followed by the election of John Steenhuisen as interim leader.

Ntuli, who resigned as a member of the party's KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in 2018, officially launched her campaign to run for federal leader on Friday.

She briefed the media in Rosebank.

"Our current leadership is a panic state and what they want to do is stabilize and maintain the status quo. I think that is the wrong direction that the DA should be going, because we are going to stagnate and we are not going to throw forward."

The 31-year-old has been a DA member for 12 years and started the party's first youth branch at Rhodes University.

She vowed to bring back fairness to the party as her first priority.

"We couldn't come together and agree on issues and that is when we started tearing each other part. But one of the things I believe has to fundamentally change in the DA is how we approach disciplinary processes, it's far too often used to go after people rather than resolve issues."
