More than 2 000 delegates have gathered for the two-day conference at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, where they are also expected to elect new leadership and to vote on policy and constitutional changes.

Current leader John Steenhuisen is set to go head-to-head with former Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse for the position of leader.

Federal Chairperson Ivan Meyer, who opened the congress, said the party wants a better future for all the people in South Africa.

"We will rewire the public governance in South Africans. We want all South Africans to be part of a stronger DA. We need to establish a new South Africa.”

Umgeni Local Municipality Mayor Chris Pappas said the party brought change for many residents.

"Our municipality was on the brink of collapse, with millions of rands unaccounted for, and service delivery at an all-time low. The ANC had failed the people of uMngeni. People were looking for hope.

“The journey to win uMngeni started 18 years ago under the leadership of Greg Krumbock, and in 2021 we won the municipality by just 42 votes. We had created history in KwaZulu-Natal by becoming the first DA-led municipality (in KZN).”
