DA KZN: eThekwini Municipality unable to break ties with Tansnat

The DA in KZN says eThekwini's short-sightedness means the municipality is now unable to break free from bus service operator, Tansnat.

The party has held a briefing on the handling of numerous affairs by eThekwini.

The municipal bus service has been marred by problems over the last few years including legal battles between the City and Tansnat.

In several instances - commuters have been left stranded.

Last month during a protest by bus drivers who want to be permanently employed by the City - Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda told them the municipality was in the process of setting up an entity to take over the bus operation.

DA's Nicole Graham says the city has got itself into a mess at the expense of commuters.

"There are definitely problems with the current operation, the complaints from the public about the bus service are frequent, running out of diesel, busses breaking down.

"We believe that by creating an entity but then effectively giving a lot of the control directly back to tansnat without there being a fair process, we are not doing the public any justice," said Graham.
