DA: Gigaba broke the law for Guptas

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it has proof that Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba illegally granted citizenship to the controversial Gupta family.

The DA's Haniff Hoosen says the then Home Affairs Minister failed to declare his decision to Parliament - contravening the Citizenship Act.

"According to a letter sent by the Director-General to the Home Affairs Committee today 'it was an omission' to not openly declare to Parliament that members of the Gupta family had been naturalised.

"Clearly Minister Gigaba was acting to hide the truth that he had personally granted the Guptas citizenship," Hoosen says.

The latest development follows the release of two official documents by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) earlier this month, claiming Gigaba ignored a decision by Home Affairs to deny the request by the Gupta family.

Gigaba maintains he has done nothing wrong and that he acted within the prescripts of the law.

But Hoosen says Gigaba should have made his decision public.

"The Minister must also include the reasons for the early granting of citizenship.

"There is mounting evidence that Minister Malusi Gigaba, his ANC cabinet colleagues and President Jacob Zuma have bent the rules to benefit the Guptas across the board."

The DA says a full ad-hoc Parliamentary Committee on State Capture needs to be established as a matter of urgency.
