"The time has come now for national government to urgently cut prices not power," says the party's John Steenhuisen.

The North Gauteng High Court is set to hear a challenge to the recent electricity tariff hikes, as well as the ongoing load shedding.

The DA wants the court to declare the rolling blackouts and the tariff increase granted by the energy regulator unconstitutional and invalid.

Steenhuisen says it is unfair that citizens are being made to pay for a utility they are not getting.

"Those who cannot afford electricity must be considered and protected by Nersa before Nersa decides to much to increase how much Eskom can charge for electricity. The ongoing electricity crisis is devastating costing our South African economy R1 million every day."
