DA commits to supporting under-resourced KZN police stations
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
The DA says it will work to get KZN police stations better resourced to accommodate sexual assault victims.
The party’s Shadow Minister of Police, Zakhele Mbhele, conducted oversight visits to the Camperdown and Mpophomeni policestations yesterday.
It was to assess their capacity to assist victims of gender-based violence and domestic abuse.
He says the visits highlighted the importance of localising resourcing at a station level, so police management on the ground can respond to the needs of their communities.
"Across the board, we found that there were infrastructure deficiencies especially at the Mpophomeni station - where there is no spare [interviewing space]. They have to be reliant on a nearby NGO to use their spare office when available to interview victims," Mbhele said.
He also says there are vehicle and personnel shortages.
KZN SAPS has not yet responded to a request for comment.
