DA calls for Nomgcono Jiba's resignation

The DA says National Prosecuting Authority's Deputy National Prosecutor Nomgcono Jiba should vacate her position with the body with immediate effect.

The opposition party had been reacting to the Pretoria High Court's ruling that Jiba be struck from the roll of advocates.


The case was brought by the General Council of the Bar.


It relates to the handling of high profile cases - including the NPA's decision not to pursue corruption charges against former crime intelligence boss, Richard Mdluli and the decision to prosecute KZN Hawks boss Johan Booysen on charges of racketeering.


DA leader Mmusi Maimane says the Presidency should take a stand against senior officials implicated in court cases.


"These are problems that we are discovering more and more, that you don't want the legal system to run the country in some ways. There's an executive for that so an imperative on the president to say this person has been found unfit and I really maintain that these are individuals that are protected by the Presidency.


"That's why they feel they can use tax payers money to abuse an extensive amount of legal resources with appeal after appeal but its modelled by Jacob Zuma himself," he said.


Yesterday, her legal representative Zola Majavu said they will appeal the ruling.


"She instructed us to bring an application for leave to appeal and we are currently formulating those grounds. However, she did make a point that I must always stress that she respects the judiciary, she respects the decision of the court," he said.
