DA calls for KZN MEC resignation over School Nutrition Programme

The Democratic Alliance in KZN says the Education MEC should resign over the latest National School Nutrition Programme saga.

The provincial education department released circular on Monday announcing plans to cut the programme by five percent.

It cited budget constrains, saying the grant allocations are not enough to meet the increasing number of learners in need.

The department withdrew the circular on Tuesday.

MEC Mbali Frazer has blamed the release of the circular on miscommunication.

She says the programme will continue as normal when the school term resumes in April.

DA provincial spokesperson on education Imran Keeka says despite the withdrawal, it is clear that the school nutrition programme is in a dire financial state and is poorly managed.

He says they've asked for an urgent meeting with the Education Portfolio Committee to summon the MEC and HOD so they can account.

"The public flip-flopping between the HOD of the department announcing that almost 125 000 learners will be cut from the programme and the MECs about-turn is simply indicative of a department in crisis. When the political and administrative heads are not talking to each other about such significant and life-changing matters with such profound consequences,  then there is definitely a deep-seated crisis in KZN Education."
