DA bemoans 'lackadaisical' repairs of KZN police vehicles

The DA in KwaZulu-Natal says mechanics are taking too long to repair police vehicles in the province.

It's bemoaned the turnaround time for repairs after receiving a written parliamentary reply from KZN's Transport Department.

The DA's Sharon Hoosen says they have been told that 1 716 vehicles are sitting in workshops.

Just over 4 200 vehicles have been deployed across 184 police stations.

She says it's worrying that stations in crime-ridden areas like Inanda, Umlazi, Plessislaer and Kwamashu E are having to wait months for their vehicles.

She says there's a direct correlation between these vehicles being unavailable for use and KZN's rising crime statistics.

"If Inanda police station, which is well known as the rape capital of SA, don't have sufficient vehicles to patrol the streets, this is a clear indication that vehicles repairs are not a priority to the powers that be and that lackadaisical approach of key basic services needs to stop.

"The MEC for Community Safety [Peggy Nkonyeni] must take this matter up."
