D-Day for Riah Phiyega

Phiyega has until today to reply to the president, after the recently-released Marikana Report said the South African Police Service were to blame for the deaths of 34 striking miners at Lonmin mine in August 2012.

The Commission has in its report recommended that an inquiry into Phiyega's fitness to hold office be instituted.

Earlier, National Police Spokesperson Solomon Makgale maintained Piyega would meet to today's deadline.

"The national commissioner will comply with the directive from the President that she submits by July 31," he said. 

At the weekend, Phiyega said there are some areas of the Marikana Report which she strongly disagrees with.
