Criminal intent behind attacks on foreign nationals: Ramaphosa

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa insists the recent attacks on foreign nationals in Durban were not xenophobic.

"This thing has sort of erupted because of criminal elements, particularly in KZN where there was a squabble between two people - a South African and Malawian - and then the conflict started spreading. It was being spread by people with criminal intent."

Malawian nationals from the Burnwood Informal Settlement fled their homes last Tuesday after being attacked.

Some have since returned to the settlement while others have indicated to authorities that they would like to go back to Malawi.

Speaking on the campaign trail in the north of Johannesburg - Ramaphosa told reporters South Africans are not xenophobic.

"South Africans have always lived side by side with people from other nations. And we will continue to do so. We want proper order so that everybody, including ourselves as South Africans, must be properly documented so that our ability to live together must be consolidated without anyone feeling fearful and unwanted in South Africa."
