Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande says a criminal case has been opened following violent protests at UKZN's Pietermaritzburg campus.

The William O’Brien exam venue was set alight on Tuesday morning.
Nzimande said the incident is believed to be linked to the ongoing student protests over the new NSFAS direct payment system.

He described it as a heinous act and says the university is working with the police so that those responsible are held accountable.
"Should it be established that there are students behind these criminal acts, they must be subjected to the university's internal disciplinary processes because arson, vandalism and intimidation are counter-revolutionary and will not justify any legitimate forms of protest and should be condemned unequivocally by all, including by student themselves,” said Nzimande.
The university says classes have since returned to normal.
