The annual crime statistics cover the period from April 2017 to March this year.

Durban North CPF chair, Haden Searles says while they're somewhat outdated, there was indeed a spike.

He says they managed to wrest the problem for a while but in recent months, it's flared up again.

"There's a lot more co-operation especially in terms of co-operation between police, security companies, and neighbourhood watches. That's been a big help. The station commander has initiated various other projects, like checkpoints and small roadblocks. Unfortunately, house robbery is still very high. We've had a spate within the last couple of months," he said.

He says they're working to address the problem but that they need help.

"It's a huge area as well. We cover almost 43-square-kilometres of space with minimal resources and everyone is trying to pull things to assist. We need more manpower and more vehicles," he said.

Elsewhere in the province, Inanda's topped the list for the highest number of reported RAPE cases in the country for a second year.  This despite seeing a drop of 10% drop from the previous period.

Umlazi reported the second highest number of rape cases countrywide, at 252.
