Crime stats: KwaMashu's clean slate explained
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The national police's top brass has broken its silence on why the latest crime statistics in some areas across the country, including KwaMashu reflect no criminal activity.
The statistics show KwaZulu-Natal is the country's murder capital, with 3 810 murders in the 2014/ 2015 financial year, an increase of 5.4%.
A quick study of the stats showed no data for the KwaMashu Police Station.
Values of 'zero' or 'not applicable' were shown in all crime categories for the township, north of Durban.
SAPS spokesperson Solomon Makgale says a technical error occurred.
"When the team was updating the stats on the website, something went wrong and some of the stations reflect zero values with regards to certain crime categories.
"It doesn't mean the stats that were released have been affected because we have documents. We have on our system the correct values that were shared with the public," he said.
