Crime spike warning ahead of festive season
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
As we move towards the festive season experts are once again warning of a spike in crime.
The December holidays usually sees a spike in robberies and burglaries, especially at homes and businesses left unoccupied for extended periods of time.
Crime expert Dr Chris de Kock says they don’t expect this year to be any different.
De Kock says South Africans need to ensure there is some sort of activity at their homes while they are away so as not to attract attention.
"It is usually to find a someone like a student or relative to stay in your house while your are away, but if that's not possible then ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your house or ask your security company to increase their rounds", he said.
"Also, you must arrange for someone to pick up any mail and not have it piling up. Try as well to make arrangements to have some lights coming on in some rooms in the house", de Kock said.
