Covid-19 vaccines expected to be effective against new variant

Infectious disease expert, Professor Ian Sanne says they do expect that the COVID-19 vaccines will still be effective against the new variant.
Research is currently underway to see whether the mutation will significantly reduce vaccine efficacy.
On Friday, the Department of Health confirmed that a new variant of Covid-19, which is spreading faster, has been discovered in three provinces, including KZN.

Professor Sanne, who is a member of the Ministerial Advisory Committee, says the recommendation is to continue the roll-out of the jabs when they land in the country early next year.
"It does depend on exactly which vaccine we will have access to at a reasonable cost, likely that we will do this in a phased approach with health care workers and people most at risk of severe coronavirus receiving the vaccine first and then progressively through the community."
