COVID-19 spike in EC triggers lockdown extension
Updated | By Newswatch
President Cyril Ramaphosa says a 50% jump in coronavirus cases in the Eastern Cape over the past week should be a wake-up call for all of us.
He says a resurgence of Covid-19 infections can be prevented in the country if we all play our part.
The President addressed the nation last night. He said a resurgence plan would be implemented to respond to new localised outbreaks.
"Testing is essential if we are successful at preventing a resurgence. We are now working to significantly increase the number of tests that are done each day."
Ramaphosa says the Pfizer vaccine trials which showed the jab was 90% effective at preventing Covid-19 are a game-changer.

He spoke about our country's future, "South Africa is collaborating with several multinational pharmaceutical companies to obtain a safe and effective vaccine for our people."
The President says he understands there's now Covid-fatigue, but some people are just not listening. He's seen evidence of this on social media.
"I've been images of indoor venues, crowded with people who are not wearing masks. And with no evidence of social distancing. The same rules applied in the early days of the lockdown should also apply now. "
