COVID-19 regulations arbitrary, inhumane says Nelson Mandela Foundation
Updated | By Newswatch
The Nelson Mandela Foundation has raised concerns about some of the lockdown regulations.

It says many of them are paternalistic in nature, lack justification, are arbitrary, officious, petty and inhumane.
CEO Sello Hatang says the granular details of some rules - such as those in the regulations for the sale of clothing - defeats the purpose of the task at hand.

He says when these are allowed to go unchallenged - they'll become the norm.
"The foundation is concerned about how the regulations are now becoming an instrument that is being used as if restrictions are an end itself, instead of us focusing on the goal.
"The goal here is to ensure that we flatten the curve, but that does not mean that we are controlling the disease. You control people so much that you don't deal with the concerns that they have."
Hatang says people's dignity must be preserved during the enforcement of the lockdown.

The Foundation has commended the President Cyril Ramaphosa for acknowledging that mistakes have been made in the enforcement of the lockdown - and says it welcomes the announcement of a possible shift to level 3 lockdown for parts of the country.
