Covid-19 positivity rate remains below 5% as SA moves to level 1

The Covid-19 positivity rate in South Africa is back under 5% as the country moves to Adjusted Lockdown Level 1.

The latest data released on Thursday shows that the positivity rate is at 4.1%. 


It was released as President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed South Africans in the evening and confirmed the easing of Covid-19 regulations.


The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says there were 1 678 new Covid-19 cases in the latest 24 hours reporting cycle.


A further 101 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing the total fatalities to 87 626.


Western Cape now tops the charts with 363 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours.


“The majority of new cases today are from Western Cape (22%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (20%), Gauteng Province accounted for 14%; Eastern Cape & Free State accounted for 12% each; Northern Cape accounted for 10%; North West & Mpumalanga accounted for 5% each, and Limpopo accounted for 1% of today’s new cases,” the NICD said in a statement.


There have been another 128 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with 6 576 people now receiving treatment in both private and public facilities.


On the vaccine front, 146 190 vaccines were administered on Thursday.
