From interactions with people on the ground the organisation's Mervyn Abraham says he's observed that food only lasts for two weeks in poor homes.

"Food has never been affordable so the COVID-19 has only deepened hunger, but hunger has existed before COVID-19. Food has not been affordable and continues not to be affordable.

"The increases in the social grants are not enough to meet the food needs. Furthermore, they tell us that the lockdown restrictions have greatly impacted on their ability to shop."

Abrahams joined other organisations in a webinar on Wednesday to discuss the food crisis in South Africa.

The KZN Subsistence Fisherfolks' Desmond D'sa says the fishing community is massively affected due to the restrictions of lockdown.

He says fishermen have received no assistance from government or food parcels.
