COVID-19: Health MEC pushes for hospitalisation over home isolation
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Health MEC’s urging people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and need to go to the hospital not to stay at home.
Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu says there have been a number of coronavirus-related fatalities in the province, after people refused hospitalisation - even after being instructed by their doctors.
"The latest death was of a lady who, along with her husband, both tested positive and they insisted on self-isolation", she said.
"She then began having respiratory problems and when advised to go to the hospital she refused insisting her husband was taking good care of her, even though he is not a clinician", Simelane-Zulu said.
"The woman had challenges and eventually passed on. That is an unnecessary death", the MEC said.

Briefing the media in Mayville on Sunday, the MEC said some fatalities could have been avoided.
"If a your health worker or your clinician is advising you to be hospitalised please do so", Simelane-Zulu said.
"We are not saying people must be hospitalised at our facilities. They can be hospitalised at any private hospital although, as a province, we have enough beds to accommodate everyone", she said.
