Covid-19 deaths reach 59 000 in South Africa

The number of Covid-19 deaths recorded in the past 24 hours has increased by a further 297 fatalities.

This brings the number of Covid-19 related deaths to 59 092 since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. 


According to the latest statistics released by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), there were 11 093 new infections.


This brings the total number of total Covid-19 cases in the country to 1 843 572, representing a positivity rate of 23.7%.

Gauteng continues to record the biggest increase in positive cases, accounting for 30.8% of the national total. 


The province is followed by KwaZulu-Natal, which has a positivity rate of 18.9% and the Western Cape at 16.8%. 


To date, 10 114 new Covid-19 people have been admitted to hospital for treatment of the virus.
