Phaahla briefed the media on Friday morning, along with a panel of experts who discussed government's efforts to stem the spread of coronavirus and the national vaccine rollout programme.

"While there is a downward trend, clearly the third wave is still within our midst,” he said.

"Gauteng province has clearly reached the peak of its third wave and is currently on a continuous downward slope.

"But as we have seen in the first and second wave, this is more like a relay race as one province does down in numbers another provinces takes over and in this case the relay race as been picked up by the Western Cape."

Phaahla says the number of Covid-19 deaths is unacceptably high.

"The numbers are still unacceptably high and of course, one death is just one too many because, as you know, this is not just a statistic but it is somebody's sister, brother, father, mother."
