COVID-19: Basic Edu concerned over short-staffed schools in new year
The Department of Basic Education says it's concerned about what impact the second COVID-19 wave will have on the 2021 academic year.
It says at least 32 teachers have succumbed to the virus in less than a week in just one province.
Director-General Hubert Mathanzima says there are fears they'll start the new year short-staffed.

"When schools reopen in January, we are anxious about the impact this is going to have on every teacher on every learner.
He says they'll also be monitoring matric exam marking centres.
"We are making sure that we reduce the spread of the virus in the marking centres. We have increased the number of monitors in the centres.
