Covid-19 active cases breach 80 000 mark in SA

The number of active Covid-19 cases in South Africa has increased to 82 736.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says there were 7 657 new cases, representing a 17.2% positivity rate.


This brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 1,747,082.


The majority of new cases are once again from Gauteng (64%), followed by the Western Cape (9%) and the North West (7%) provinces.


Gauteng recorded 4,891 new infections.


“An increase of 632 hospital admissions and 78 in-hospital deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours,” reads the statement by the Institute.


Fifty-nine  more people have succumbed to the virus.


South Africa’s death toll stands at 57,731.


A total of 7 571 people are currently admitted to hospitals.


The national recovery rate has slipped to 92%.


On the vaccine front, 1 773 417 vaccines have been administered.
