Court to rule on bail bid in Durban 'explosives' case

Community members have gathered outside the Verulam Magistrate's Court - north of Durban - where judgement is expected to be made in the bail application of 11 suspects arrested in connection with a series of bomb threats in and around the city.

The accused have also been charged in connection with the death of Abbas Essop in a knife attack at a mosque in Verulam. 

They were arrested by the Hawks in October and have alleged links to ISIS. 

Dozens of people outside court believe the accused are a danger to society.

"We cannot allow terrorism or such criminal attacks to thrive in this country and in this land. We have lived here peacefully for so many years and now this is happening. We need to put a stop to it." 

Charges against seven of the accused have since been dropped. One other suspect was granted bail of R100 000.
